A PORTRAIT OF BLACK EXCELLENCE
George L. Mallory, M.D.
(October 9, 1920 - August 24, 2016) was a prominent educator, psychiatrist, civil rights activist and former Medical Director of D'Veal.
Born to a domestic worker and a railroad worker in Richmond, Virginia, George Mallory escaped the oppression of racism in the segregated South and moved north to New York where he completed high school and college. He interrupted his education and valiantly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Mallory dedicated his personal and professional life to helping poor and underprivileged communities. After graduating from Howard University, he became a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology - one of the few uniquely qualified African-American Board Certified Psychiatrists in the country. After the 1965 Watts riots. Dr. Mallory joined in the efforts to heal a nation and was one of the initial staff members at the Martin Luther King, Jr./Drew Medical Center: authored the original concept that resulted in the construction of the Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Building; and, because of his service, the hospital psychiatric library was named in his honor.
During his remarkable life journey, the renowned Dr. Mallory excelled in his profession. He received numerous proclamations and awards for his amazing work.
After retiring from the County of Los Angeles, Dr. George Mallory continued to work well into his 90s as a founding member of the D'Veal Family and Youth Services in Pasadena.
